Sunrise provides musical theatre, drama, song-writing, and other arts art programs to several international schools in Shanghai giving the schools arts curriculum a huge boost.

In the Musical Theatre program, we not only encourage our students to challenge themselves to become the best actors, singers, and dancers they can be, but also motivate them to become the better version of themselves. The Musical Theatre program is a family and we ensure that our students learn and grow in a safe and comfortable environment.

On a weekly basis, an intensive schedule is prepared with given assignments in dialogue, songs and choreography that the student must then practice and memorise in preparation for the final performance. The skills involved in musical theatre performance are composed of a basic actor’s tools for self expression including vocal technique in speech and singing, breath support, diction, vocal projection and range, character building analysis, alongside physical body awareness, dance, kinesthetic learning and even circus skills whilst learning about musical theatre repertoire and its historical background. Students will be assigned different roles/excerpts and materials from the show that include solos and group musical numbers, solo monologues and dialogues, that are all to be developed, guided and mastered towards the final performance.

Since 2017, Sunrise Art Group offers many of the best summer musical theatre programs in the country Its 8-day intensive summer program attracts students from all over China. Taught by accomplished Broadway and West End professionals from abroad with expertise in staging, choreography and music direction, students are split into small groups (by age) and led through a rigorous rehearsal process to master songs and scenes from an originally developed script by Sunrise teachers and students. Students from the summer program have performed in over 10 cities including Hangzhou Grand Theatre, Wenzhou Grand Theatre, Shanghai City Theatre, to name just a few.

In the summer of 2020, Sunrise partners with the China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation and launched the “Broadway in Bona Villa” charity camp. 30 students from China, US, Canada, and Sweden took the challenge of a 10-day intensive rehearsal to perform a full musical show to the local audience.
